Looks Like Klink's out for good

Former Democrat U.S. Rep. Ron Klink of Murrysville has, at least for now, decided against trying to regain a congressional seat.

Klink was considering challenging Republican Melissa Hart of Bradford Woods in the 4th District. Klink used to represent that district before giving up the seat to unsuccessfully run against Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum in 2000.

Klink reportedly bowed out after being told by various unions they would not back him -- possibly because Klink endorsed Republican U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter last year over his Democrat opponent, former U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel of Montgomery County.

Klink's departure certainly bolsters the chances of Jason Altmire, the former UPMC Health System vice president of government relations, to capture the 4th District Democrat nomination. Altmire was said to be sweating Klink's potential entry into the race.
